Tarallucci
The name “Tarallo” is used to indicate oven-baked products with a ring shape and braided ends. The origin of the term is uncertain, however. The most likely theory is that it derives from the Greek word “daratos” (a type of bread), but others believe that it comes from the Latin word “torrère” (to toast), and others still from the Italic word “tar” (to wrap). Its shape reminds us of the cyclical nature of the seasons. The original recipe was a savoury one; the sweet version came later. In Abruzzo, Taralli have a familiar feel and are linked to religious festivals. The most famous Taralli are those from San Biagio, which are blessed during the festival dedicated to the Patron Saint. They are consumed at home because they are believed to cure illnesses of the throat.
